About Biomedical Informatics
UC San Diego is a vibrant, young institution in a city that offers a diverse healthcare industry composed of large HMOs, academic and non-academic health centers, a wide portfolio of community clinics, and a well-connected network for public health. San Diego County has over three times the concentration of employment in research and lab services compared with the United States. It outpaces the nation in growth rates for life sciences cluster industries, especially in new sectors such as industrial biotechnology, wireless health, and genetic sequencing.
Our Mission
We pursue a tripartite mission of innovative biomedical informatics research, training, and service in a highly diverse environment.
- Research: We develop, implement, and evaluate new informatics algorithms and tools for accelerating health sciences discoveries, improving healthcare, monitoring and preventing disease.
- Training: We educate the future leaders in our field for academic, industry, and government careers, and we promote professional development of our staff and faculty.
- Service: We implement and support practical informatics tools that make a difference in health sciences research and clinical practice.

Our Research
Our research is focused on closing the loop from data acquisition, structuring, analysis, data-driven modeling, decision support, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination at the point of care. The end goal is to provide effective decision support that is delivered to healthcare providers, public health officials, or consumers wherever needed. Learn more about our research.
Locations
We are based in La Jolla, California, but are connected to collaborators all around the world. See our office locations.
