  • Ming Tai-Seale, Ph.D.

    Ming Tai-Seale, Ph.D.

    Professor, Joint Appointment with DBMI
Professor, Vice Chair for Research, Department of Family Medicine

Research Focus: Professor Tai-Seale' research investigates the practice of medicine, patient-physician communications, and healthcare economics. She pioneered the use of user action log data in electronic health records to study physician practice and wellbeing. She was also the first to use video and audio recordings of clinical encounters to study time allocation in primary care practices. She publishes original research articles in journals such as JAMA IM, JAMA Network Open, Health Affairs, Health Services Research, Medical Care, and Journal of American Geriatrics Society. Her publications on patient-physician communication earned the Article-of-the-Year award from AcademyHealth. A co-authored publication on the practice of medicine in the age of electronic health records was the second most read paper in Health Affairs in 2017. In addition to her faculty appointments at UC San Diego, she is the Director for Outcomes Analysis and Scholarship at the UC San Diego Health and Director for Research and Learning in the Population Health Services Organization at UC San Diego Health. Dr. Tai-Seale earned her Ph.D. in Health Services with a cognate in Economics from UCLA.
